“In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.”
— Alfred Stieglitz
My first tip is to download Lightroom on your phone. Why? Because when you are traveling and you take a nice photo, you can immediately edit it and post it on social media. Otherwise, you would have to wait until you get home or in your hotel room to grab your laptop and edit the photo. So it is much easier to have Lightroom on your phone and edit it directly.
And then we immediately come to the next point. You will probably think ‘Adobe Lightroom is very expensive, I could never afford that’. But did you know that there is also a free version of Lightroom? This is only for mobile. In the free version, of course, less is possible, but it is certainly not impossible to beautifully edit a photo. So with this next tip, if you don’t have the money to subscribe to an Adobe subscription, consider the free version of Lightroom!
If you are worried about your (almost) nonexistent photo editing skills then this tip is just for you. Nowadays it is possible to upload or make presets on Adobe Lightroom to use on your photos.
What are presets?
“Presets are Adobe Lightroom’s way of saving a set of editing adjustments so that you can easily re-apply the same adjustments to multiple photos. These adjustments include things like exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, and pretty much anything else you can change on a photo in Lightroom.” – Source
There are many websites that sell presets, but my favorite website is 123 presets. They have an extensive range of presets for a low price. Take a look at their website and judge for yourself. The examples below are pictures taken while traveling in Tenerife, watch the differences with and without using presets. To make it even more fun, 123 presets happened to run a promotion for the entire month of May, which means that if you buy 3 presets you will get 12. That means you get 9 presets for free!
Another very useful advantage of Lightroom is the synchronization with your account. You edit a photo on your mobile, then this photo is stored on your Adobe account and you can continue editing on your laptop. This has the great advantage that you are not tied to one device, but that you can continue where you were on any device. Also, it is useful that suppose you lose your phone, then in this case you do not lose your photos.
Edit copies, not originals
The last one in this list to. Lightroom, unlike all other photo editing programs ensures that they do not edit the original photo, but edit a copy of it. This is a very good feature of the program, because this way you always keep your original photo. So if you are dissatisfied with the editing of your photo, you can just start over because you still have the original photo.
