Home » Wheelchair Accessible Hotel Review | Hotel Middelpunt, Belgium
Focused on maximum accessibility and equipped with all the medical necessities while remaining affordable, Hotel Middelpunt sets a new standard. While perfection is hard to achieve, this hotel comes incredibly close. Located in Belgium near the French border, it’s a convenient stopover en route to the Eurotunnel or as a destination for a relaxing getaway. I’ve had the pleasure of staying here twice: once as a quick overnight stop returning from England and another for a weekend escape in Belgium. Each time, I was blown away by the thoughtful accessibility. Read on to discover why this hotel should be on every wheelchair user’s travel list!
“Accessible, affordable, and thoughtful—Hotel Middelpunt is a game-changer!”
Hotel Middelpunt offers three room types that are all fully wheelchair accessible: twin, family, and high-care rooms. I’ve stayed in both the high-care room and the family room, and I was impressed with how well everything was set up to meet the needs of guests with disabilities. The rooms are also equipped with everything you might need to feel comfortable during your stay. Each one has a fridge, which is great for storing medications or personal snacks, a TV for entertainment, and free Wi-Fi to keep you connected. One feature I really loved was the step-free access to private balconies in every room. It’s not something you usually see in accessible rooms, and it felt like such a luxury to be able to roll outside, enjoy the fresh air, and take in the views.
Every room in this hotel is equipped with profiling beds, which is a feature you don’t come across very often in hotels. These beds allow you to adjust the height, making it easier for caregiving. They also let you raise or lower your upper and lower body, ensuring you can find the most comfortable position for sleeping, resting, or just relaxing. It’s a small detail that makes a huge difference, especially if you need specific postures for medical reasons.
The high-care room goes even further by including a ceiling hoist, which makes transferring from bed to a wheelchair or other equipment incredibly easy and safe. For guests staying in the family or twin rooms, the hotel offers free active and passive hoists during your stay. Just remember to bring your own sling, but if you forget, they have several options available for use.
Bathrooms are often the most challenging part of accessibility in hotels, but Hotel Middelpunt has done an incredible job making them as inclusive as possible. Every bathroom in the hotel has a roll-in shower, so no worries about inaccessible bathtubs. If you need a shower chair, you can simply request one from reception, and they’ll bring it to your room free of charge. They offer different types of chairs to suit your preferences.
The toilets are designed with grab bars on both sides, giving you support for safe transfers. In the high-care room, you’ll also find a ceiling hoist, which is perfect for guests who need more assistance. The sinks are roll-under, and there are no thresholds to navigate anywhere in the bathroom. This makes moving around completely hassle-free, whether you’re using a wheelchair or other mobility aids.
The bathrooms are spacious and thoughtfully laid out, giving you plenty of room to maneuver or bring in additional equipment if needed. Overall, the level of accessibility in these bathrooms is impressive, and it made my stay so much easier and more comfortable.
Hotel Middelpunt offers so much more than I can fit into one review. Beyond the accessible rooms and bathrooms, they provide beach wheelchairs and wheelchair bicycles so you can explore the beautiful surroundings. Need personal assistance during your stay? The hotel can help you arrange external caregivers—just reach out to them in advance.
Have you ever seen a tilting bath accessible by a ceiling hoist? Or an infrared sauna with ceiling hoist designed for wheelchair users? Until staying here, I didn’t even know such features existed! Best of all, these amenities are included at no additional cost.
Without hesitation, I’m giving Hotel Middelpunt a full 5 out of 5 stars. This hotel goes above and beyond to create a wheelchair accessible paradise, offering rare amenities like ceiling hoists, profiling beds, and even family rooms designed for accessibility. Its central location is ideal, and the staff is dedicated to meeting every need. I’m honored to have stayed here and share my experience. If you’re searching for a truly inclusive hotel, look no further!
